Wellness trends for 2021
2020 was an eye opening year when it came to our health. A huge emphasis was placed on the importance of being fit and healthy and I think it’s fair to say that we all went through some major changes. We switched to working from home, we lost the use of our gyms, cancelled our vacations, shopping trips became a thing of the past, we redirected our focus from skincare to sanitisation, and dealt with the infamous ‘maskne'. Mourning the loss of so many little pleasures has ultimately left our physical and mental wellbeing in disarray.
Well not for much longer! 2021 is the year we regain our wellness routines. For many of us we will be reviving what we lost and discovering new ways to take care of ourselves. Having to adapt to a new way of life in 2021 means a range of deeper more accessible wellness experiences are emerging, so let’s look into some of the top wellness trends for 2021.
The past year has been a stressful time for many of us and stress takes a toll on your body. In fact, you might not realise it but stress can disrupt nearly every single system in your body. Common signs of stress can include: constant worry or anxiety, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep, overeating, dizziness, mood swings and many more. Adaptogens help your body to combat stress by increasing the state of non-specific resistance in stress and decreasing your sensitivity to stressors, which results in stress protection.
2021 is the year of plant powered wellness and Adaptogens are on the rise. We as consumers are becoming more health conscious and concerns over health and wellness are driving our decision making. The powerful compounds in adaptogens help your body to deal with daily stressors by ensuring your internal systems are functioning at their optimum and thus, improving your overall general health.
CBD is slowly becoming more wildly accepted all over the world as people are looking to more holistic ways to deal with their medical issues and improve their overall well-being. Using CBD has been shown to reduce anxiety as well as depression and, it may have beneficial effects on acne due to its anti-inflammatory qualities and its ability to control sebum production.
The research into the potential health benefits of CBD are ongoing, so new therapeutic uses for this natural remedy are sure to be on the horizon but for now it seems that CBD is a safe natural treatment for a range of health issues.
Cold exposure therapy has been used for hundreds of years in many different cultures and is now becoming part of the mainstream. Cold showers and cold water immersion are becoming increasingly popular due to their health benefits. Cold water immersion activates the body’s natural healing powers that can help to relieve the symptoms of many medical conditions and promote a sense of wellbeing. Practicing cold therapy on a regular basis will improve your body’s lymphatic and immune systems, it will improve circulation and reduce muscle inflammation.
Feeling low? Try a cold shower, the benefits of cold water actually run deeper than you think when it comes to boosting your mood. Studies have shown that cold water triggers a flow of mood-boosting neurotransmitters which make you feel happy. So why not give it a go and remember to start slow!
2020 saw a lot of our time being filled with digital media consumption. Media consumption became a way of filling our time last year though the media we consume is not always positive and can negatively affect your mental wellbeing. If 2020 taught us anything it is that we can set our own boundaries and decide what we take in. After all you become what you consume.
This year a digital detox is a trend that many of us will be hopping on. It is the idea of devoting a day, a weekend or even a week without your phone, social media and TV. Instead, take this time for yourself, do some reading, go on long walks in nature, work on a project, mediate or try something new. This will allow yourself to disconnect from the world and reconnect with yourself, something us millennials don’t do enough of!
Simpler skincare routines
Long gone are the days of complex 10 step skincare routines. In 2021 we are taking it back to basics. Staying at home has allowed us to let our skin breathe and in doing so we have come to realise that the chemical exfoliants and diverse range of acids are not exactly essential daily products. This is your sign to strip back that complex skincare routine that left you feeling confused about when to use what product and the products that can’t be together. Its time to save your pennies and settle into a simple 3 step skincare routine that you can be consistent with.
Step 1 - Cleanse
Step 2 - Moisturise
Step 3 - Protect
Once you’ve go these steps down you could add in a face mask here and there but remember less is more!
